Is it permissible to celebrate birthdays?

In resentment of west, we have started calling a lot of cultural and social things that travel from west against religion. Birthdays and anniversaries are one of the few examples.

Our religion does not say anything about it. It neither allows nor prohibits these celebrations. There is no problem with this very idea as far as religion is concerned. We can attend and even celebrate provided we are not committing anything against the sharia or violating the rules of ethics. If these factors are taken care of, there is no harm in celebrating.
