Values and Leadership
Bill Clinton was one of the most popular presidents in US history. He led the country to remarkable economic growth during the financial crisis. However, in his second term, his sex scandal emerged, in which he made false statements. This relatively minor matter had no direct bearing on the nation’s progress, but it still cost Clinton and his party dearly. They were defeated in the next election.
This example shows that the secret to modern world development lies in pursuing values. Even the most popular president is not immune to the consequences of violating those values, no matter how great his achievements are. This is because no leader or ruler is above the law, and is allowed to destroy the system of the country. This system ensures that a leader is replaced by another and still the country remains on the course of development.
Unfortunately, in our society, there is a tendency to place more importance on attachment to prominent leaders than values. No matter how corrupt or flawed a leader may be, his emotional supporters will never abandon defending him. This can have disastrous consequences for the country, allowing leaders to get away with harmful behavior without facing any consequences.
In our society which is indulged in the blind love of leaders, the biggest task is to develop values. We must raise awareness among people that they must look beyond love and hate of leaders and understand the importance of values when selecting their leaders. When the nation understands this, the doors to all kinds of progress will open for us.
